The purpose of this page is to record the people enslaved by Portius Moore (1784-1847) and attempt to connect them to their families.

Portius Moore was born in 1781 and lived at the "Mount Tirzah" plantation that his father Stephen Moore had established in 1778 in Caswell County, North Carolina. In 1792, Person County was created from Caswell County and the Mount Tirzah plantation changed its county without moving location.

When his father died in 1799, Portius inherited an enslaved man named Pollidore who was valued at £55.

In the 1820 census, Portious was enslaving 17 people in Person County.[1]

In the 1830 census, Portius was enslaving 24 people in Person County.[2]

Portius died on 3 December 1847 in Person County without leaving a will. His 1848 estate papers include "divisions" and other documents naming 37 enslaved people and assigning dollar values to most of them. Four unnamed children are also mentioned.[3]

On 18 March 1848, his estate inventory named 31 of these enslaved people in family groupings. The inventory also included the names of two of the four previously unnamed children, because they had died in the interval between 3 December 1847 and 18 March 1848.[4]

Research Notes

  • It appears that Portius inherited Frank and Cupid from his first wife Frances Webb when she died around 1810, after she inherited the two men from her father William Webb in 1809. (See profiles for sources.)
  • It appears that none of the enslaved families, as documented in the estate inventory, were kept together as units when they were divided between the wife and children of Portius.
